How Much Pride Do You Take In Your Work?

What happened to tradespeople? I think of the term, and I think of old European architecture and the pride tradespeople took in what they did. Tradespeople and Contractors often ask why their liability insurance is so expensive, what could possibly happen? It so happens that some work is being done in my subdivision, the city is building a new street. My two year old found this:

It's a storm drain, complete with plywood cover and rock to weigh it down. That should keep people safe...

In the trades, accidents occur much too often. As you can see from the picture above, they are almost all completely avoidable. A bit of care and a bit of pride in the work you do will go a long way to saving you money in the end. In this case a company would be in some serious legal trouble, I can't imagine many people agreeing that a rock, some plywood and some orange spray paint would make a 10ft drain safe in a residential neighbourhood.

To the contractor's who ask what could happen, I think it's self explanatory. This is but one situation. Often times the Contractor is a good person, and so are the individuals actually carrying out the work, but a lack of care, a decision made in haste or sheer negligence can lead to a disasterous outcome. Ask yourself this, how much would you sue for if it was your child that fell in?
